Edward is frequently accompanied by his brother, named Alphonse Elric. The story follows the adventure of the titular character, named Edward Elric, also known as the “Fullmetal Alchemist”. However, the events of the second anime, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, faithfully follow those from the manga. Although they basically start the same, the first anime, midway through its run, begins to differ greatly from the original manga characters that are killed early on in the manga survive to the end of the first anime and vice versa. The story is set in a fictional universe within the 20th century in which alchemy is one of the most advanced scientific techniques.

And Blockbuster, which once reigned supreme, is all but wiped off the map. Hollywood Video has been gone since 2010. The last one near me, a lone Family Video, closed up shop a year or two back. But one of the best parts of having those rental stores was being able to discover other shows I had not seen or heard of before.Īll those video rental shops are mostly gone now. Both Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z were there, with characters and storylines that were blatantly missing from their dubbed counterparts. Luckily for me, they usually kept a pretty wide anime selection. Blockbuster and Hollywood Video reigned supreme in those days.
I started renting subtitled versions instead. And by “not up to par,” I mean please don’t go back and revisit them. But really, it didn’t take long to realize that the dubbed versions of these shows were not quite up to par. Anime was starting to become more popular here, especially Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon. It was a much more affordable way to keep up with my favorite characters. I’m sure we all wish comics still had those ‘90s prices. And while the cost probably wouldn’t seem too bad these days, it seemed like a lot back then to a kid with no job – not to mention, things have certainly gone up in price since then. On top of that, it’s not like I had a ton of money at my disposal. If a brick-and-mortar didn’t have it, neither did you.
This was definitely before the days of finding anything you wanted on the internet. We had a single comic shop that carried tons of them, but that was it. Manga wasn’t the easiest for me to get my hands on. (As a side note, I still have both of these 25 years later!) From there, it was a deep dive down the rabbit hole. One was Dragon Ball, and the other was Sailor Moon. He chose two comics for my birthday that year. That changed when he gave me manga for my birthday. We hung out a lot, but I had never quite made the leap into manga or any anime series yet. A friend of mine was super into Dragon Ball at the time. It all started with a small birthday gift: manga from the local comic book shop.
